Get excited everyone World Nordic Walking Day is almost upon us!
With Canberra’s very own Capital Nordic Walking and our partner the Heart Foundation on Saturday May 19th we will celebrate with an event at the Embassy in Yarralumla.
Everyone is welcome and it’s free! Those with and without poles – curious to find out what all the fuss about Nordic Walking is, along with Canberra’s growing community of Nordic Walkers. It will be a fun-filled morning with plenty to see and do and loads of prizes, including Australia’s first-ever Nordic Walking Race, a 7km Nordic Walking Invitation Challenge race around the central basin – starting and finishing at the Embassy.
You can learn more about Finland, with Finnish food and drinks also available for purchase. While the Nordic Walking Racers are out you can walk without poles alongside the social Nordic ‘Walk and Talk’ group or join in a “Come and feel the Nordic Walking muscles” demonstration session run by Capital Nordic Walking, and actually feel how Nordic Walking actively uses over 90% of your muscles – way more than regular walking, running and cycling.
Our partner the Heart Foundation is already accepting donations on our event page and will do the same on the day in support of their mission to reduce suffering and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease in Australia.
The secret to Nordic Walking being way more effective than regular walking, running and cycling is in the specially designed poles (different to hiking poles) and correct technique which enables you to harness the power of your upper body – back, shoulders, arms and core – to propel yourself along – literally “walking on all fours”!
Add on the mood lifting benefits of exercising outdoors in Canberra’s beautiful green spaces and the social aspect of Nordic Walking with family and friends and you can easily understand why it has taken off around the world.
So if you haven’t already, register now for this free event on our Facebook or Eventbrite pages, to stay up to date with latest details and learn more about the immense health and wellness benefits Nordic Walking has on offer!
We’ll see you there!
